Basalt Rebar vs. Fiberglass Rebar: How Do They Compare?

GFRP rebar bridge deck construction

Basalt fiber rebar and fiberglass rebar are both composite reinforcement products made the same way — the only real difference is the raw fiber. Basalt rebar is made from basalt fiber; fiberglass rebar is made from glass fiber.

Basalt Fiber Rebar

  • 2.5 times stronger than steel in tensile strength.
  • 5 times lighter than steel.
  • Naturally resistant to alkali, rust, and acids.
  • Shares concrete’s thermal expansion coefficient, so it won’t cause temperature-related cracking.
  • Withstands higher temperatures before weakening.
  • Doesn’t conduct electricity or pick up radio-frequency fields, making it suitable for hospitals or data centers.

Fiberglass Rebar

  • Up to 7 times lighter than steel in concrete flatwork, cutting structural load and transport cost.
  • Doesn’t corrode or rust even with minimal concrete coverage, extending the structure’s service life.
  • Has twice the tensile strength of steel.
  • Needs no heat treatment or welding, simplifying installation.
  • Non-conductive and non-magnetic, removing the risk of shock or interference with sensitive equipment.

Where They Differ

Technically, the main difference between basalt and GFRP bars is temperature tolerance. Fiberglass rebar and mesh hold their properties up to about 200°C, while basalt reinforcement handles up to 400°C. That said, both fiber types are coated with the same protective compound during production, and that compound’s thermal tolerance matters more than the fiber’s own limit — so in practice, there’s little meaningful difference between fiberglass and basalt rebar when it comes to heat resistance.

Conclusion

Both basalt fiber rebar and fiberglass rebar outperform steel rebar in several respects, each with its own strengths. Which one fits your project best comes down to your specific requirements.
