| Question | Fibreglass (FRP) handle | Wood handle |
|---|---|---|
| Weather, rot, insects | Unaffected | Needs care; rots if left wet |
| Splinters and cracks | Does not splinter in normal use; damaged handles can shed fibres | Can splinter and crack |
| Electrical work | Non-conductive (clean, dry handles) | Dry wood insulates poorly in damp |
| Shock and vibration | Depends on construction; foam-filled or sleeved designs feel softer | Natural damping; traditional feel |
| Weight | Light, consistent | Varies by species |
| Repair | Replace the handle | Can be refitted or re-wedged |
| Price | Higher | Lower |
What to check when buying
- Construction: a pultruded rod or tube with fibres running along the handle is stiff and strong; ask whether it is solid or hollow and what fills it.
- Fixing to the head: adhesive plus mechanical retention (cross-pin or wedge) resists loosening; check how the head is attached.
- Grip surface: textured or sleeved grips matter more than the core material for comfort.
- UV protection: a veil or UV-stabilised resin keeps the surface from chalking in sun.
- Size and tolerance: OD and straightness must match the tool eye; give the exact dimensions.
Tube or solid?
A tube is lighter and cheaper for long handles; solid rod resists crushing at the head. The trade-off is explained in solid vs hollow fiberglass rods and tube sizes are in FRP round tube.
Safety note: wear gloves and a dust mask when cutting or sanding fibreglass, and replace a handle with exposed or broken fibres.
Frequently asked questions
Are fibreglass handles unbreakable?
No. They resist rot and weather and are strong along the fibre direction, but a sharp impact or overload can break or crack them. Choose the handle for the job and replace damaged ones.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for digging tools?
For heavy leverage use a solid or reinforced handle; for light tools a tube is lighter. Match the handle to the head and the work.
Can a fibreglass handle be replaced?
Yes, with the head fixing method the maker specifies; use adhesive and a retaining pin or wedge.
