Short answer. An FRP or composite retaining wall is a post-and-panel (or sleeper) system that does not rot, rust or need treatment. For low garden walls a standard system is usually enough; above roughly a metre, or with a road or building behind it, an engineer must check the design. Drainage behind the wall matters as much as the material.

Design and installation basics
- Measure the retained height and what sits behind the wall (garden, driveway, building).
- Check local rules: many places require an engineered design above about one metre, or if there is a surcharge; ask your authority.
- Provide drainage behind the wall and a compacted base.
- Set posts to the specified depth and keep them plumb; stack panels with the interlock oriented as designed.
- Backfill in layers and compact; do not let heavy machinery run near the wall.
Coastal and wet sites
Choose a resin for the salt or water exposure (resin guide) and consider sheet piling for walls below water: composite sheet piling. Composite sleepers for landscaping walls are lighter than timber and avoid treatment chemicals, but are more flexible, so keep spans as designed.
