How Precision Pultrusion Molds for FRP Profiles Are Made

Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer (FRP) profiles see wide use in construction, automotive, electrical infrastructure, and industrial reinforcement applications thanks to their corrosion resistance, strength, and light weight. A critical factor in FRP profile quality is the precision and durability of the pultrusion molds used during production. At Haikuo Composite Technologies, we’ve developed a refined 12-step mold manufacturing process to ensure every pultrusion die meets the demands of high-volume, high-accuracy production.

Step-by-Step Pultrusion Mold Manufacturing Process

1. Raw Material Acceptance

High-grade steel blocks are received, inspected, and matched to corresponding mold IDs. Dimensions are checked to confirm the blank material meets tolerance and quality standards before processing begins.

2. Rough Milling

Initial shaping of the steel blank happens through rough milling. Workpiece width, machining allowance, and hardness get measured with calipers and hardness testers, setting the base for precision machining.

3. Surface Grinding

Grinding refines the surface for flatness and alignment. Technicians check height, width, flatness, and perpendicularity with micrometers and dial indicators ahead of CNC precision work.

4. CNC Machining (Phase 1)

Key areas like mold cavities and slot dimensions are milled on advanced CNC machines. Cavity depth and width are measured against 3D mold design files to keep final FRP product dimensions consistent.

5. Drilling Operations

Precision holes are drilled for lifting hooks, alignment bolts, and disassembly functions, with each position and hole count verified against design specs for structural integrity and production safety.

6. Laser Heat Treatment

Laser hardening boosts wear resistance on mold surfaces. Post-treatment hardness gets measured with Rockwell hardness testers to confirm values around 55 HRC, extending mold life during continuous pultrusion.

7. CNC Machining (Phase 2)

After heat treatment, final dimension tuning takes place — rechecking cavity and slot depth confirms thermal distortion hasn’t compromised machining accuracy.

8. Precision Grinding

Another round of high-accuracy surface grinding ensures flatness and straightness across the mold. Operators run a trial mold closure (dry fit) to confirm the mold halves align perfectly and rule out flash issues in production.

9. Polishing

The mold cavity gets hand-polished or machine-polished depending on complexity — a smooth surface improves resin flow and release during pultrusion. Roughness is measured with a profilometer to confirm it falls within the designed micro-tolerance.

10. Hard Chrome Plating

A uniform chrome layer resists corrosion and extends mold life. Post-plating inspections check coating thickness and look for defects like edge peeling, cracks, or pitting, using thickness gauges and visual tools.

11. Mold Assembly & Final Grinding

The mold is reassembled and carefully aligned, with final outer dimensions trimmed as needed to fit pultrusion machines. External surface appearance and mold markings get inspected before approval.

12. Preforming Unit Preparation

The preforming section (which arranges fiber before it enters the mold) is tested. Inspectors confirm smooth fiber routing, correct hole count and location, and that no burrs or oxide remain that could snag fiber rovings during production.

Why This Process Matters

Each of these 12 steps helps pultrusion molds run continuously with minimal wear, deliver consistent high-quality output, and reduce maintenance downtime. Following this rigorous process is what gives Haikuo molds excellent durability, dimensional accuracy, and surface quality — all of which translate directly into better FRP profile performance in the field.
