Fiberglass vs Wood Tree Stakes and Plant Supports

Short answer. Fibreglass tree supports and plant stakes do not rot and flex with the tree; wood is cheaper but decays and stiff stakes can rub or girdle the trunk. Whatever the stake, support loosely and for a limited time so the tree builds its own strength.

Fibreglass stakes Wood stakes
Rot and insects None Decay at ground level
Flex Flexes with the trunk; springs back Rigid; can break
Reuse Many seasons Often single use
Handling Light; pointed tip Heavy, splinters
Cost Higher up front, lower over reuse Low

How to support a young tree

  1. Use one or two stakes on the windward side, placed outside the root ball.
  2. Tie low on the trunk with a soft, wide tie that allows some movement; check yearly so it does not cut in.
  3. Remove the support after the tree is established (often after one or two seasons) so the trunk strengthens.
  4. Choose length from the planting depth and the height the tree needs support to; see the length rule in fiberglass stakes and markers for the same approach.

The same pultruded rod is used for plant stakes, driveway markers and signage: solid vs hollow fiberglass rods.

Choosing length and when to stake

  • Stake length = depth in the ground (often 40–60 cm for a young tree) + the height up the trunk where support is needed.
  • Only stake trees that cannot stand upright alone or are in exposed or windy sites; unstaked trunks strengthen faster.
  • Use a soft, wide tie that allows movement; never wire directly around the trunk.
  • Check ties each season and loosen them as the trunk thickens.
  • Remove stakes once the root system holds the tree, usually within a year or two.

Frequently asked questions

Can fibreglass stakes damage a tree?

Not if the ties are soft and loose. The risk comes from tight or abrasive ties and stakes left too long.

Can I reuse fibreglass stakes?

Yes: inspect them for splinters or damage before reuse and discard those with exposed fibres.
